Writing

The writing curriculum in Mount Vernon Schools is based on the Washington Learning Standards which include the Writing Essential Academic Learning Requirements (EALRs) and Grade Level Expectations (GLEs) which describe what students should know and be able to do.

The curriculum material used in grades 1-12 is Step Up to Writing which features research-based, hands-on writing strategies and activities that help students proficiently write narrative, personal narrative, and expository pieces; actively engage in reading materials for improved comprehension; and demonstrate competent study and critical thinking skills. This comprehensive resource creates a common writing language throughout the grade levels and content areas.

Kindergarten and First Grade teachers use the David Matteson method for writing and early literacy.
